Big Poppa’s is an excuse for us to play out a selection of the songs we grew up partying to. When I first started clubbing Funk nights were always the one’s that had us dancing and smiling all night long. For me Funk & Northern Soul has always been a true image free party sound. Funk & Northern Soul clubs are about getting your grind on without a care in the world.

For the mix me and Jizzy have dug deep into our personal collections of old classics but also thrown in a few new faces like Plantlife and Quantic. Enjoy!

4Series hail from Wolverhampton

and are basically a bunch of really solid guys. They love making music because they love music. They have never tried to hijack some trend but play what they grew up listening to and love… expect some real heart and soul from these boyo’s. myspace.com/4series.

This is what Mr Tomcat had to say about his mix for us.

4Series RHYME AN RHYTHM
Nice Mr L asked me to give you a bit of background on the mix so here we go….

All the tunes are selected by me, Mr Tomcat from my personal collection. I’m the bassist and dub mixing agent from 4Series the reggae / dubwise collective originating from Wolverhampton, but now scattered across the England . We’ve just had a tune released on Tanty Records called ‘Fire in the Skies’ on their wicked compilation ‘Roots of Dub Funk Vol. 5′, and this tune kicks off the mix. I tried to put together a mix of tunes to give a perspective on how we arrived at this track, and where we’re going now. I hope the tracks I have selected that follow achieve this aim.

You will notice that where possible I have listed where I bought each record from. Some selfish or musically over competitive folks will think I am foolish for giving away my sources. I look at it this way…if you like a track on this selection you have no excuse not to go and find it and put some money back into the music, not to mention the people that work hard to put the records on the shelves!

One that note, enjoy the tunes and keep your eyes out for the debut 4Series EP, to be released Autumn 2006.
