2006… as seen through the eyes of Mountain Rescue

It was quite the year, for myself it started off when I moved back to England after 5 months in Canada. After a brief stint in London I headed south settling in Brighton, oh and Italy won the world cup.

On the Mountain Rescue side of things we have hit a milestone – show #10, and our first release – Damadeo’s Red Wine Apocalypse

I’ve put together a quick overview of my all winners. A show of songs from artists I thought put out something special in 2006. There was so much good music to be heard this year, escpecially in a resurgent and vibrant folkelectronica scene.

Red Wine Apocalypse

The boy, D>A>M>A>D>E>O, stares out the brother, Mountain Rescue. He fires an intense volley of noise into his stomach. He spits back at him, an inch or two from his face, and collapses to the floor. He places the body of his guitar, now rampaging into feedback, on the ground between his knees, and angles the neck over him. He arches his back, hair flailing. The sound surges…

As much as we would like to say this is how D>A>M>A>D>E>O AKA Daniel Lucchesi put together his first single it simply isn’t the case. D>A>M>A>D>E>O, a work-a-holic and self proclaimed media node (Trashbat to the core) churned his computer, sampling and sequencing this film and musical score while consuming a heroic amount of red wine.

A look at things today and a dip into yester year, It’s entitled Red Wine Apocalypse and is out now on Mountain Rescue Records. His debut concept album entitled lost footage is planned for release in the New Year.

Modeselektor

Modeselektor of Berlin must be having a riot… Flexing their insane samples and beats in a city where austere minimal techno a-la thin-framed black glasses and polo necks still rules. Yawn.

On one hand Hello Mom! with tracks like Dancing Box and Silikon pick up where M.I.A. and Diplo left off, whereas tracks like I Love You, Tetris Pack and Vote or Die lean towards a more abstract BoomBip or Boards of Canada sound. The album sweeps you away with its joyful beats and incredible diversity which strangely all hits the mark.

In Hello Mom, Modeselektor have served up a masterful blend of electronica, hiphop and techno…and it’s all just down right fun… yeah I said fun.
